On July 7, the Tokyo Regional Minimum Wage Council reported to the Tokyo Labor Bureau that the minimum wage in Tokyo should be revised to 1,113 yen per hour, up 41 yen from the current 1,072 yen per hour. This is the highest increase since the current system was introduced in 2002. If no objections are filed, the increase will be announced on September 1, and take effect on October 1.
The minimum wage in Tokyo is the highest in the nation both now and after the increase; it was 869 yen in 2013, and exceeded 1,000 yen for the first time in 2019, when it reached 1013 yen. The wage remained flat in 2020 due to the impact of coronavirus, but it resumed yearly raises in 2021 and 2022.
