Visitors to Japan surpass pre-COVID numbers

#Market Insight

The Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) announced on April 15 that the number of visitors to Japan in April reached 3,042,900 — 4% more than in April 2019. This is the second consecutive month that the number of visitors exceeded 3 million. Of the 23 major markets, 14 countries/regions, including South Korea, Singapore, and Germany, reached a new record high in April, which was also driven by a recovery in international passenger flights.

Although the 56.1% year-on-year increase was not close to the record high of March (3,081,600 visitors), it was influenced by the fact that Japan's Golden Week public holiday started at the end of April.

By country/region, South Korea had 661,200 visitors, up 16.7% from April 2007, China had 533,600, down 26.5%, and Taiwan had 459,700, up 13.9%. France, Italy, and the Middle East region also posted record highs in a single month. This is due to demand during the cherry blossom season and increased travel demand after the month of Ramadan.
