In the Tokachi region of Hokkaido a succession of start-up companies have been born, attracting attention from all over the country. Businesses centered on space development, agriculture, and animal husbandry are solving local issues and becoming the driving force behind economic development in the entire region. A support system has been established to encourage the founding of such companies, leading to a cycle of entrepreneurship leading to further entrepreneurship.
The Tokachi Innovation Program (TIP) plays an important role in supporting startups in the region. This program is held to foster local entrepreneurs, and has already led to the birth of several businesses. Hosted by the Obihiro Shinkin Bank among others, this program attracts participants mainly from among women and people who have returned to the area from Japan’s major metropolitan areas, and is helping to create a climate conducive to entrepreneurship.In order to support the further growth of start-ups in the future, Obihiro Shinkin Bank is considering new support measures such as the establishment of incubation facilities and VC funds.
