The Japanese government has announced a comprehensive policy to promote the growth of startups in the healthcare sector. The “White Paper on Strengthening Japan's Healthcare Startup Ecosystem,” led by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, outlines specific measures aimed at solving social issues and economic growth through startups.
The white paper proposes specialized support measures for each of the following sectors: biotechnology, medical devices, medical DX/AI, and agritech. Particular attention is given to the introduction of the Health Tech Challenge, a new grant program based on development milestones, and the invitation of top-tier VC firms with an eye to expanding into overseas markets.
In addition, a specific timetable has been set for policy implementation from 2024 to 2026, and the government intends to work with relevant organizations to implement and continually improve the policy, aiming to accelerate innovation in Japan's medical and long-term care sectors and create an internationally competitive growth industry.
The government intends to take this opportunity to strengthen the startup ecosystem and deepen cooperation with related parties so that Japan can establish itself as a “startup powerhouse” in the healthcare sector.
