The Hamadori region of Fukushima Prefecture is about to be reborn as an international research city, with the aim of recovering from the Fukushima nuclear disaster.
The Fukushima International Research and Education Institution (F-REI) has been established and plans are in place to attract 500 researchers by 2030 as a joint initiative of the federal, prefectural, and local government. The core of the F-REI concept calls for the establishment of research centers in robotics, energy, agriculture, forestry, and fisheries.
F-REI invites outstanding researchers from Japan and abroad and focuses on applied research and to develop the region's economy. Nobel Prize-winning researchers have already signed on, as well as researchers from East Japan International University, Tohoku University, and Osaka University.
With Hamadori as the proposed site of the 2030 G7 summit, it is hoped to showcase the Fukushima model to the world as a symbol of reconstruction.
