Electric scooter-sharing service Lime, a company that operates an in over 280 cities worldwide, began offering its services in Japan on 19 August 2024. Lime is a ride-sharing service that allows users to reserve electric micro-mobility vehicles from ports located around town via a dedicated app, and then return them to a nearby port after use.
Unlike other micro-mobility companies, Lime uses vehicles that it has developed in-house, providing a service that is customized to the road conditions and characteristics of users in each city. In addition to the existing ‘electric kickboards,’ the service in Japan will also offer the first ‘electric seatboard.’ The seatboard is highly stable and can be used while sitting, making it less tiring when used for extended periods. A ‘helmet selfie’ function has been introduced to encourage people to wear helmets, and users can receive discounts and other benefits by sending photos of themselves wearing helmets via the app.
At the time of the service launch, more than 40 ports will be set up in six areas of Tokyo: Shibuya, Shinjuku, Meguro, Setagaya, Toshima, and Nakano, with a total of 200 electric micro-mobility vehicles. Lime plans to plans to increase the number of ports and expand its service area even further.
