The University of Tokyo's investment company, the University of Tokyo Collaborative Platform Development — shortened to Todai IPC — will launch a program to support startups utilizing "carve-outs," in which large companies and others carve out part of their business and spin it off as a new company. Todai IPC will provide free assistance in formulating a business plan, establishing a capital policy, and consulting with the parent company for the first six months of operations. They will also consider investing in promising in-house entrepreneurs from a fund operated by the company.
According to Todai IPC, this is the first carve-out support program by an investment company in Japan. The program is open to all subsidiaries, divisions, and teams. Applications can be submitted even when the parent company has not yet given its consent for the carve-out.
The University of Tokyo will also make its co-working and support center, 1stRound BASE in HiRAKU GATE in Todaimae, available for use during the support period. Lawyers, accountants, and other experts will also be available free of charge.
