Stagnating research in Japan: can AI turn the tide?

#Academic

In recent years, the number of academic papers published globally has surged, casting a shadow on Japan's scientific and technological research output which has largely remained stagnant. According to a report by Japan's Cabinet Office, the number of research papers from Japan has seen little growth and its global share is declining.

For Japanese researchers writing papers in English still poses significant challenges, while neighboring countries like South Korea and China have systems in place to support researchers linguistically. In Japan, the lack of such support systems has resulted in a lack of both funding and guidance.

However, with the rise of advanced generative AI and translation/correction tools like DeepL, Google Translate, and Paperpal, the strain moves from a lack in language ability — requiring a large investment of time and effort to rectify — to a user's literacy in utilizing AI technologies, which is much quicker to improve.

Going forward, the proper application of generative AI could make it easier for non-English speakers to publish their research internationally, offering the key to increasing Japan's research output.
