Nitori expands its store openings in Asia, challenging IKEA

#Market Insight

Low-priced furniture giant Nitori is expected to triple the number of its stores in China and Southeast Asia — to about 300 — in three years, surpassing Japan in the number of new store openings. The company will capture demand in Asia, where the gross domestic product (GDP) growth rate is high despite high prices, and the number of dual-earner households is expanding.

The number of stores in Asia outside of Japan was approximately 90 at the end of February 2010.

Competitor IKEA is also expanding its Asian operations. In 2009, IKEA opened the world's largest store in terms of total floor space, including warehouses, in Manila, Philippines.

Nitori's sales in the Japanese market are nearly 10 times that of its competitor IKEA.
