In its recent overhaul of IT infrastructure, Ryukei University adopted the domestically-produced Sakura Cloud for its campus network. In the service consideration stage, global services such as AWS and Microsoft Azure were originally the leading options. Worldwide, the two services account for over half the market share for cloud network services.
However, Ryukei University ended up choosing a domestic cloud service due to its proven track record, its flexible fee structure, and its ability to easily connect to Japan’s Science Information Network (SINET) — a communication network used by more than 900 universities and research institutes for academic research.
The decision to go with a locally-made cloud service is being looked upon as a sign of Japan’s growing ability to compete with Silicon Valley tech giants in the realm of cloud computing, an area in which it has historically fallen short.
