Hogwarts Legacy sold 12 million copies worldwide in the first two weeks after its release, and also ranked No. 1 in sales in Japan for two consecutive weeks.

The game's release was met with a boycott campaign due to comments made by J. K. Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter novels, against transgender people. However, this seems to have had little impact on Japanese sales, and while many Twitch streamers in other countries are refusing to stream the game this has not been the case in the Japanese streaming community.
