Chinese AI avatar startup enters Japan

#AR, #Entertainment, #Technology

Deemos Technologies, born out of an incubation program at Shanghai University of Science and Technology in 2020, has achieved success in its native China with its AI-generated digital avatars, where they are being used as newscasters, streamers, in commercials, and at reception terminals in banks.

Now, attracted to Japan by the enormous popularity of digital content — including the prevalence of virtual streamers known as vtubers — it is seeking to enter the already-crowded market based on its approach towards an often criticized aspect of AI: its preoccupation with Caucasian faces.

Having built up a large track record in the Chinese domestic market, the company is strong in the production of East Asian digital human subjects. Since both Japan and China have the same East Asian faces, they are able to produce faces that look more natural than those of Western companies, and at a considerably lower price than their global competitors.
