Gusto, the family restaurant chain, opened its first environmentally friendly restaurant under its new sustainability policy.
The Gusto Higashimurayama Shiyakusho-mae store, which opened on August 11, uses a solar power system installed on the roof and CO₂-free electricity to provide 100% renewable energy for electricity used at the store.
This, coupled with the use of carbon-neutral city gas, means that the store will reduce CO₂ emissions by approximately 88 tons per year.
Carbon neutral Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) is a product in which greenhouse gases generated in its the processing — from mining to combustion — are offset by ‘CO₂ credits’ created through environmental conservation projects in emerging countries. The combustion of such gases is considered to generate no CO₂ on a global scale.
The restaurant also uses energy-saving technology such as motion-sensor-controlled lighting in the restrooms and staff areas, as well as light sensors rather than timers for external lighting and signboards.
