Kiyomizudera Temple
Situated atop a small mountain on the east side of Kyoto, Kiyomizudera Temple offers a commanding view of the city. The temple's stage, supported by massive pillars, is one of the most famous images of Japan. But Kiyomizudera offers more than just a pretty view, with the experience of visiting beginning long before you reach the temple itself.
History
Gion Erea
Gion is the perfect place to explore the Kyoto of another age. Known as the city's entertainment district, particularly for the refined performers known as geisha (or more properly geiko) who have enthralled patrons for centuries, Gion is full of handsome, understated townhouses and teahouses, restaurants serving traditional Kyoto cuisine, and venerable temples and shrines.
Eat & Drink
Nishiki Market
Nishiki Market today is very different from its origins as an open-air fish market some 400 years ago. Nishiki Market has an astonishing 130 vendors packed into a narrow passageway that is approximately 400 meters long and 3.9 meters wide. It continues to thrive, attracting not only visitors, but Kyoto locals too.
Attraction
TOEI KYOTO STUDIO PARK
Toei Kyoto Studio Park is a movie theme park and studio operated by the Toei Company, a producer of Japanese movies and television programs. Those familiar with Edo-period culture will recognize the replica of Edo's Nihonbashi Bridge here, as well as the former Yoshiwara red light district. Walking through these traditional sets familiar with fans of Japanese films and TV period dramas is an absorbing visit to the past.
