In recent years, the startup ecosystems in both Japan and Taiwan have flourished, with stronger business collaborations emerging across key industries like semiconductors, advanced manufacturing, biotechnology, and the digital economy. Additionally, cross-border investment activities between the two regions have seen significant growth. Over the past five years, 15 Taiwanese startups backed by Darwin Ventures have successfully established a presence in Japan and begun expanding their operations. Since 2023, following the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, Darwin Ventures has restarted its investment efforts in Japan, with eight new investments made so far. Notably, a publicly listed firm on the Tokyo Stock Exchange has already acquired one of these companies.
At this event, Darwin Ventures’ Venture Partner, Mr. Kazuaki Konno, will present our insights on the investment opportunities and challenges for startups in both Taiwan and Japan. We are also pleased to welcome Dr. Rudder Wu, founder of Thermalytica, a leading materials science company spun off from NIMS in Tsukuba. Dr. Wu will discuss how they leverage resources from Taiwan-Japan venture capital and industry networks to drive the company’s growth.
